UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar argued that the equi-percentile approach used for CUET-UG score normalisation is a fair procedure that does not involve luck. The Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG, the entry point for undergraduate admissions to over 200 universities, was released on Saturday. Some applicants complained about reduced marks due to normalisation. The equi-percentile approach calculates the percentile for each candidate by comparing their raw grades to others in the same session. These percentiles are then averaged and turned into normalised scores.
Sessions with fewer applicants are combined with larger sessions. These normalised results received by candidates in several sessions on the same topic using the equi-percentile approach can be used in the same way as raw marks from a traditional single-session test. If the raw marks of the skill component have a certain weightage in a particular university, it can be added to the remaining weightage of the normalised marks to prepare the rank list.
