Women’s Christian College hosted its fresher’s talent event, Junior Dramuda, on the 16th of August 2022, exclusively for freshers to participate and showcase their talents. This took place at Lucy Peabody Hall, with students of all three years witnessing the performances. The programme saw participation in various items like solo dance, spoken word recitation, stand-up comedy and group singing, representing the different clubs in college such as Western Music Club, Indian Music Club, Fusion Dance Club and Literary and Debate Club.
The number of performances in Junior Dramuda showed promising participation from the freshers this year. As September approached, increasing club engagements around the campus marked the peak of extracurricular activities, ahead of assessment tests and other curricular commitments. At nearly the same time as Junior Dramuda, the Literary and Debate club organised a week-long ‘Writathon’, a daily writing marathon from 7th to 14th of August, where the participants were encouraged to use their creative skills and come up with original output in accordance with the writing prompts provided. The finished work of club members was posted on the Instagram handle ‘Tapestry of Thoughts’. Speaking about this, one of the club coordinators, Lakshana said, “Every day, throughout the Writathon, it was evident that the students wanted to keep it going, meeting the challenge of writing every day. We, the coordinators, had a great time reading and posting their work on our social media handle.” She added, “From a club that was just a face at the Dramuda and at the subsequent auditions, we are now becoming known around, receiving more attention and interacting with our club members more often.”
The Senate and the club coordinators pledged to increase opportunities and activities to attract more participation in extracurricular events. Such initiatives are becoming more popular among students, judging by their interest. The Cultural Secretary, Nikita Felix, commented, “It has definitely been a joy to see the clubs involving themselves more this year. Hopefully, we will see WCC making a mark in the cultural scene of Chennai’s city colleges. The teams of coordinators have been extremely obliging and a pleasure to work with. My only wish is that the efforts they undertake reap the recognition and acclaim they deserve.”
