Food Fair 2023 organised by the Alumnae Association of Women's Christian College, was held on 11 August 2023, from 11:20 am, in the college playground. Students from both Shift I and II, staff members and alumnae of the college, actively took part in the fest.
The inauguration of the fair was held in the foyer of the Centenary Block. The event was declared open by the Principal Dr. Lilian I. Jasper, following an invocation. Office bearers of the Alumnae Association and members of the Senate led the inauguration. Every department of the college set up stalls at the venue, selling various food items, arts, crafts, and services like mehndi, nail art etc. The alumnae association’s stalls were arranged in front of the Centenary Block and sold various yummies like chocolate cake, biryani, puffs, sandwiches, and the Andhra speciality, pootharekulu. They also had raffle draws, a Khazana stall, ice creams, plants and a live dosa counter.
The raffle winners were chosen through several draws, from the huge collection of raffle tickets sold to the entire college community before the commencement of the fair. The first raffle winner was picked by the Principal, followed by Alumnae Association members, faculty and senate members.
Jail is a popular event of the fair every year, where students pay a token fee to jail whoever they want, and the ‘prisoner’ has to wait inside a small confined area till someone else bails them for a higher price. Students also request songs from the DJ and dedicate them to their departments or friends, and while peppy numbers are played, large crowds of students gather on the field to dance or simply cheer these electrifying performances.
Performances by various clubs like the Western Dance Club (WDC), Fusion Dance Club (FDC), and Western Music Club (WMC) are regular crowd pullers. Divina Sofi, a student from III B A English reported, "The performances by the various clubs and songs played during the event made the fair feel festive. This attracted us to be more involved and spend more time at the fair."
The students of Shift I attended regular classes till 11:20 a.m. that day and Shift II attended classes from 2:30 p.m since the event came to a close by then. Proceeds of this annual fair are used for the running of McDougall Memorial Nursery School, which is run by the Alumnae Association of WCC for underprivileged children.
