The Information Resource Centre (IRC) of Women’s Christian College, recently organised a book fair on campus. According to existing records, this is the first time WCC has taken up such an initiative for the benefit of students and faculty. The fair was held on 16th and 17th August 2023 from 8 am to 5 pm in the Assembly Hall of Science Block. The Principal Dr Lilian I Jasper, Vice-Principal Ms P Lizzie Angelina, Librarians Dr Lisa Sheba Rani and Dr Roselin Jahina S, Student Senate of Shift I, and faculty members took part in the inauguration ceremony held at 10 am on 16th August. Nine book suppliers and publishers took part in the two-day event on campus.
This event was organised exclusively for staff and students of the college, with a discount of 15 - 20% on all books. The fair showcased books from numerous disciplines, of which novels garnered the highest demand. In addition to fiction, the fair also had an exclusive collection of books for Science, Literature, Humanities
and Commerce, keeping in mind the needs of both undergraduate and postgraduate students of the college. Book stalls for competitive exams like UGC NET, UPSC CSE, TNPSC and many more, caught the interest of many passionate students. "At first most of us thought that the fair would have only literature books, but the variety of science books surprised me. I bought two of them. I am really excited about the prospect of such book fairs being held on campus in future," said a second year BSc Physics student.
Apart from students, the fair also benefited faculty members of various departments. Books on various subjects were on sale at a discount. Readers were also interested in the small collection of popular Tamil Literature that was displayed.
IRC’s debut book fair gained positive responses. The student as well as the staff community was extremely happy about this initiative. “Almost every reaction we received was positive. We are so happy about this. Our primary focus is to build passionate reading in young students,” said Librarian Dr Lisa Sheba Rani. “We are now planning to conduct a Book Fair in WCC every year,” added Dr Sheba.
The Information Resource Centre of WCC houses a massive collection of books, journals, magazines, newspapers, e-resources, archives and other reading materials from various fields of study. It is open to all staff and students of WCC on working days. Digital access is also enabled. Additionally, IRC actively engages in organising various events on campus, with the primary aim of serving WCC's reader population.
