On 11 July 2023, chaos ensued as a dog on campus entered a classroom in McDougall Block and one above the canteen too, while classes were underway. “It was the first hour and class was in progress; a dog suddenly entered our classroom and refused to leave. She even sat on a chair for some time”, says a third year BA English student. Efforts by staff and students to get the dog out proved futile because the dog was scared and refused to budge.
Again the same week, two students noticed a dog standing on top of the chapel building. It seemed to be stuck and did not know how to get down. The workers on campus were alerted but they said that they did not know of a way to get the dog down and that it would come down on its own eventually.
College campus has been a safe haven for many furry four legged creatures down the years. These stray dogs have now become a part of the campus. While most dog lovers in college enjoy the presence of these dogs, the latter are also known for causing chaos.
Nobody knows how most of these stray dogs arrived on campus. Some of these dogs have made the campus their home and have even given birth to big litters of puppies periodically. To ensure the safety of students, the college authorities have brought Blue Cross staff on many occasions to vaccinate them or to take them away but these crafty creatures make sure that they are not in sight at that time.
While a lot of negatives can be listed about these strays, one cannot ignore the tug on the heartstrings while seeing their adorable antics. The fate of these dogs seems bleak if they are driven out on the roads, as they are used to this safe environment. A better solution for this problem would be to find people who are willing to adopt them and provide a loving and safe home for them.
