A plastic-free day-out with family

The Negizhimasilla Tamil Nadu Movement (NGTM) organised a family carnival from July 1 to 23, 2023, at YMCA, Nandanam. It was a fun-filled hangout spot for chennaites who wished to spend the day with family and friends.

Negizhimasilla Tamil Nadu (Plastic-free Tamil Nadu) is a movement that envisions curbing plastic and plastic-related pollution from the State. It aims to create an extensive network of school students who will act as young ambassadors for the movement. It acts as a platform where students can come up with innovative ideas and techniques to support this mission.

NGTM carnival is part of the INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME CONFERENCE that will be organised in all Towns/districts of Tamilnadu from 2023 to 2024. The main theme of the event was “surrender plastic, claim benefits”. School students registered with the NGTM movement were given special passes and the Green Points earned by students could be redeemed at this fair.

The carnival had various games and activities like Museum of Future, Beast Inflatable, Vortex Tunnel, Snow House, Horror House, Escape House and VR Games. Several food stalls and stalls were also organised. WOW photobooths and statues took care of creating awareness through the carnival. Eco-friendly products were displayed for sale by an organisation called ‘Nilayaan’.

A visitor remarked, “It’s a good initiative but the event could have been better organised. They focused more on keeping WOW statues but forgot to keep dustbins to collect the waste. I feel like their idea was great but they lacked organisational skills to pull it off well.”
